NACD Student Design Competition

The National Association of Container Distributors (NACD) proudly invites emerging student designers to participate in the NACD Student Design Competition. This annual competition highlights the next generation of packaging leaders by providing a platform for students to showcase original, innovative, and manufacturable packaging concepts. Students are encouraged to push boundaries in creativity, functionality, and real-world feasibility while demonstrating a strong understanding of current industry standards. Innovation is the core value of this competition, and entrants are encouraged to explore fresh ideas, inventive structures, and new approaches to packaging design.

1. Eligibility

  • 1.1 The competition is open exclusively to individual students enrolled full-time or part-time at an accredited college or university at the time of submission.
  • 1.2 Team submissions are not permitted; each submission must represent the work of one student.
  • 1.3 There are no geographic restrictions; international students enrolled in qualifying institutions may enter.
  • 1.4 Students may submit multiple entries (entry fee applies per submission).

2. Entry Categories

2.1 Students may submit designs under any existing NACD Award Show category, including but not limited to:

  • Personal Care
  • Food & Beverage
  • Health & Beauty
  • Industrial & Household
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Sustainability
  • Novelty / Specialty Packaging

2.2 NACD reserves the right to place a submission into a different category if it aligns better with judging protocols.

3. Submission Requirements

Each submission must include the following components:

  • 3.1 Digital Renderings — High-resolution renderings illustrating the concept's appearance, structure, and intended use.
  • 3.2 Physical Prototype — A functional or representative physical model demonstrating the design's scale, usability, and core structural intent.
  • 3.3 Technical Drawings — Engineering drawings or schematics showing dimensions, parts, closures, and key mechanisms.
  • 3.4 Materials & Manufacturing Description — A brief document outlining material choices, compatibility with existing production methods, and rationale for each selection.
  • 3.5 Written Design Brief — A 300–800 word explanation covering concept overview, design objectives, target consumer/market, functionality and usability, and innovation factors.
  • 3.6 Optional: Video Presentation — Students may submit an optional video (up to 3 minutes) demonstrating the design or prototype. This is not required for judging.
  • 3.7 Originality Requirement — All submissions must be original work created solely by the student without external design assistance.

4. Judging Criteria

Entries will be evaluated according to the NACD Awards judging standards:

  • 4.1 Innovation & Originality — Fresh thinking, novel design solutions, new approaches to package design.
  • 4.2 Aesthetics & Branding — Visual appeal, brand relevance, and shelf presence.
  • 4.3 Functionality & User Experience — Practicality, ergonomics, ease of use.
  • 4.4 Manufacturability — Feasibility using current packaging production technologies.
  • 4.5 Technical Execution — Quality of drawings, accuracy of renderings, clarity in design details.
  • 4.6 Market Relevance — Suitability for the intended market or industry.
  • 4.7 Optional Sustainability Considerations — If relevant to the design, sustainability may be acknowledged, but it is not required.

5. Material, Safety & Compliance Requirements

  • 5.1 Submissions must not incorporate hazardous, illegal, or unsafe materials.
  • 5.2 If intended for food or beverage use, the design must align with applicable FDA packaging guidelines.
  • 5.3 All concepts must be manufacturable using existing or reasonably available packaging processes.
  • 5.4 Designs involving alcohol, tobacco, or pharmaceutical products are permitted.
  • 5.5 Sustainability is not required, but innovative environmental approaches are welcomed.

6. Entry Fee

  • 6.1 A $20.00 USD fee per entry is required at time of submission.
  • 6.2 All fees are non-refundable.

7. Awards & Prizes

The NACD will award the following:

  • Gold Award — $5,000 cash prize + NACD Trophy
  • Silver Award — $1,000 cash prize + NACD Trophy
  • Bronze Award — $500 cash prize + NACD Trophy

Additional recognition may include publication on NACD platforms, press features, and displays during the NACD Awards Show.

8. Timeline

  • 8.1 Submission Window Opens: June 1, 2026
  • 8.2 Submission Window Closes: January 31, 2027
  • 8.3 Judging Period: March – May 2027
  • 8.4 Winners Announced: At the 2026 NACD Awards Show following the judging process

9. Intellectual Property

  • 9.1 Students retain full ownership of their designs and all associated intellectual property.
  • 9.2 By entering, participants grant NACD a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use their submissions for judging, exhibitions, marketing, and promotional purposes.
  • 9.3 Students may be contacted by NACD members or associated companies interested in purchasing, licensing, or producing the design. NACD will facilitate introductions where appropriate.
  • 9.4 NACD strongly encourages students to obtain provisional patents prior to submission to protect their work.

10. Disqualification

10.1 NACD may disqualify entries that:

  • Use restricted or hazardous materials
  • Fail to meet submission requirements
  • Include plagiarized or previously commercialized work
  • Contain false or misleading information
  • Are incomplete or improperly submitted

10.2 Disqualified entries are not eligible for prizes or fee refunds.

11. Privacy & Data Use

  • 11.1 Personal information will be used solely for administrative purposes related to the competition.
  • 11.2 With student consent, NACD may share contact information with members interested in a design.
  • 11.3 Data will not be sold or distributed to unrelated third parties.

12. General Conditions

  • 12.1 NACD reserves the right to amend rules, categories, deadlines, or judging processes if necessary.
  • 12.2 NACD is not responsible for lost, damaged, or late prototypes.
  • 12.3 Submission to the competition constitutes agreement to all rules stated in this document.

13. Emphasis on Innovation

Innovation is the defining focus of the NACD Student Design Competition. Students are encouraged to challenge norms, rethink packaging forms and functions, and propose designs that advance the future of the container distribution industry.


Disclaimer & Terms of Participation

NACD recognizes the importance of protecting participants' ideas and materials. Accordingly, all submissions will be treated with care, and access will be limited to individuals directly involved in the administration and evaluation of the competition. Reviewers will be instructed to use reasonable care in handling submissions and to refrain from unauthorized use or disclosure of submitted materials.

At the same time, participants acknowledge that submissions will be reviewed by multiple individuals and, as a result, absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. By participating in the competition, entrants agree that NACD and reviewers shall not be responsible for any inadvertent or unauthorized disclosure or use of submission materials. Participants are encouraged not to include highly sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information in their submissions unless they are comfortable doing so under these conditions.

By submitting an application to participate in the NACD Student Design Competition (the "Competition"), I acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions:

  1. I grant NACD and its affiliates, agents and contractors a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use my name, likeness, and biographical information, as well as photographs and video taken of me during the Competition. This includes, but is not limited to, use on promotional materials, social media, publications, and reports related to NACD's educational and promotional activities.
  2. I affirm that I will retain ownership of any intellectual property (including designs, concepts, and works) that I create during the Competition. However, I grant NACD the right to capture and use images, video, or recordings of these creations for promotional, educational, and reporting purposes connected to NACD's mission.
  3. I understand that participation in the Competition implies consent to the above terms and that NACD will not be liable for any claims related to the use of my likeness or images of my work as described.
  4. I confirm that I am either of legal age to consent or, if a minor, will have a parent or guardian sign a release on my behalf.
